Using CAPSTONE for education
The Office of Ocean Exploration and Research (OER) at National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) uses remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to explore the deepest, most remote parts of the ocean. One of their initiatives is the Campaign to Address Pacific monument Science, Technology, and Ocean Needs (CAPSTONE), which seeks to explore some of the most pristine marine ecosystems on the planet. To foster educational uses of data on CAPSTONE, NOAA is using Tator, developed by CVision AI.
Much of Tator's development was funded through Small Business Innovation and Research grants from NOAA. CAPSTONE was one of the first projects using Tator within the agency, allowing researchers to annotate vast amounts of video data. To foster public benefit of the CAPSTONE program, a curriculum was developed around annotation of CAPSTONE data in Tator, with participants including the University of Dallas and Bates College.
